What Kind Of Paint To Use On A Metal Cabinet?

I’m planning to repaint an old metal filing cabinet for my home office. What kind of paint to use on a metal cabinet?

For a metal cabinet, the best choice is a metal-specific primer followed by acrylic enamel paint or direct-to-metal (DTM) paint.

Before painting, thoroughly clean away grease and dirt, then lightly sand the surface with 180–220 grit sandpaper to improve adhesion. If rust is present, remove it and apply a rust-inhibitive primer first.

Acrylic enamel paint is durable and resistant to scratches, making it ideal for file cabinets and storage cabinets, while spray paint can provide a smoother, more even finish. Applying 2–3 coats of paint typically offers longer-lasting protection.
