Transform your old metal file cabinet into a stylish, like-new piece with these simple steps.
Step 1: Clean and Sand the File Cabinet
Remove the drawers, handles, and hardware. Clean the surface with soap and water, then use a heavy-duty degreaser (like ZEP) to remove any grease and dirt. Next, lightly sand the entire surface with 180-220 grit sandpaper, then wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove all dust.
Step 2: Apply Primer
Apply 2-3 coats of metal-specific primer to any exposed metal areas, ensuring even coverage.
Step 3: Roll on Metal Paint
Use a high-density foam roller or a short nap roller (1/4” or 3/8”) to apply a thin coat of metal-specific paint, working in one direction (either top to bottom or left to right). Once the first coat is dry, apply 2 more layers. Allow the paint to fully cure, then reassemble the hardware and drawers.
