I’m heading to college and want to loft my dorm bed to create more space. How do I do it safely?
Here's how to loft your dorm bed:
First and most important: check with your university's housing department. Many have specific rules, provide approved lofting kits, or even prohibit it for safety reasons. If you get the green light, never do it alone—you'll need a helper!
The process depends entirely on your bed frame: some have adjustable pins you move to a higher slot, while others require a separate kit with extended legs. Always ensure the frame is perfectly level and securely locked in place before adding your mattress.
Most use a system like this:
- Clear space and loosen: Move the bed away from the wall. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the underside of the metal frame at each corner to loosen it from the legs.
- Lift and lock: With a helper, lift the frame and hook it onto the higher set of pins or brackets on the bed legs.
- Secure and finalize: Tap the frame down to lock it in place. Re-position the center support bar if your bed has one, then attach the safety rail and replace the mattress.
