I’m DIYing a custom walnut top for my basement build and I’m worried about the legroom—how much overhang should a bar table have so my guests aren’t constantly smashing their knees against the base.
The overhang for a bar table should be maintained between 10–12 inches (25–30 cm). This distance provides sufficient legroom for most adults, prevents knees from hitting the table base, and allows bar stools to be tucked completely under the table when not in use.
For maximum comfort or if the table serves as a primary dining area, 12 inches is the ideal standard; if space is extremely limited, 8 inches is the bare minimum required to maintain a functional sitting position.
Keep in mind that if the overhang exceeds 12 inches, additional brackets or support structures are typically required to ensure the stability and safety of the tabletop.
