We are installing new metal bunk beds in our student housing dorms, but I’m worried about kids falling out or the frames buckling under rough use. How do you prevent bunk bed accidents and ensure total structural safety?
Preventing injuries in high-density student housing requires strict adherence to physical safety standards and proper equipment setup:
Install Full Guardrails: Ensure guardrails run along both sides of the top bunk, leaving no more than a 15-inch gap at the ends for ladder access. The rail must stand at least 5 inches above the top surface of the mattress.
Use Twin XL Mattresses ONLY: Never leave an empty gap at the foot of the bed frame where a student's limb could slip through and get trapped.
Anchor the Frame: Anchor the bed to the wall studs using heavy-duty metal brackets to prevent structural wobbling or tipping if multiple students lean on one side.
Enforce Weight Limits: Clearly post and enforce maximum load capacities (typically 250–300 lbs for student housing models).
