I am planning to redesign my kids’ shared bedroom, and I’ve found the perfect wooden bunk bed online. However I’m terrified of my oldest bumping their head every time they sit up. Are my ceilings high enough for a bunk bed?
To safely accommodate a standard bunk bed, the ceiling height should be at least 8 feet (96 inches). This setup provides the recommended 33 to 36 inches of headroom (clearance) between the top of the upper mattress and the ceiling, allowing a child or adult to sit up comfortably without bumping their head.
When calculating this, keep in mind that the thickness of your top mattress plays a major role; a thicker mattress will reduce your headroom, so opting for a low-profile 5- to 6-inch bunk mattress is ideal.
Additionally, always make sure to measure the distance from the bed to any ceiling fans or light fixtures to prevent safety hazards.
