How Do I Reupholster an Office Chair Seat at Home?

My chair seat fabric is stained and torn, but the chair is otherwise fine. Can I recover it myself without professional upholstery tools?

Yes – it's a beginner-friendly DIY project. You'll need fabric, a staple gun, and basic tools.

StepWhat to Do
1. Remove seatUnscrew from mechanism (usually 4 bolts)
2. Strip old fabricUse pliers to pull staples; keep old fabric as pattern
3. Cut new fabricLay old fabric on new, add 2-3 inches on all sides
4. Wrap and staplePull fabric tight, staple to underside – work opposite sides
5. Cut vent holesFor mechanism clearance (if needed)
6. ReattachScrew seat back onto mechanism

Materials you'll need:

  • Heavy-duty upholstery fabric (at least 1 yard)

  • Staple gun (manual or electric) with 1/4" staples

  • Flathead screwdriver or staple remover

  • Scissors

Time: 1-2 hours. Cost: $10-30 for fabric.
