Lately I’ve been wondering why people with ADHD rearrange furniture when they’re trying to focus or feel overwhelmed. It seems like a common pattern, but I don’t really understand what drives it.
People with ADHD often rearrange or reorganize furniture to gain stimulation and reduce attention or emotional instability by changing their environment.
This is related to executive function challenges and a need for novelty.
When the brain feels understimulated or overwhelmed, quickly restructuring a space can provide an immediate sense of control and a dopamine boost, which may temporarily improve focus and reduce anxiety.
However, this is only one form of self-regulation and does not occur in all individuals with ADHD.
