Whenever I sit for a while, my thighs feel numb and my feet go to sleep. Is my chair seat too long, or is this a circulation issue?
Most likely, your seat is too deep — pressing against the back of your knees and cutting off circulation. Here's how to fix it.
The 2-3 Finger Test:
| Test Result | What It Means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 2-3 fingers fit snugly | ✅ Perfect seat depth | Nothing to change |
| No space, seat touches knee | ❌ Seat too deep | Reduce depth or add lumbar cushion to move you forward |
| 4+ fingers gap | ❌ Seat too shallow | Increase depth or get a deeper chair |
Ideal Seat Depth by Height:
| Your Height | Ideal Seat Depth |
|---|---|
| Under 5'4" (162 cm) | 15-16 inches |
| 5'4" - 5'10" (162-178 cm) | 16-18 inches |
| Over 5'10" (178 cm) | 18-20 inches |
Other Causes of Numbness:
- Seat angle tilts forward too much → adjust tilt
- Seat cushion too hard → add gel pad
- Sitting with wallet in back pocket → remove it
Pro Tip: If your chair doesn't have adjustable seat depth, buy a lumbar support cushion — it pushes your hips forward, effectively reducing seat depth.
