Just trying to figure out my setup after a recent lower back issue—been reading mixed opinions online and wondering, Is standing desk better for a herniated disc?
Not necessarily “better,” but for people with a herniated disc, a standing desk is usually more beneficial than prolonged sitting.
Prolonged sitting significantly increases pressure on the lumbar discs, while standing can reduce part of that load.
However, the key is alternating between sitting and standing rather than standing for long periods.
The optimal approach is to switch positions every 30–60 minutes and include short walks. This helps reduce disc pressure, improve blood circulation, and decrease stiffness.
Standing alone for too long can also cause lower back muscle fatigue, so proper ergonomic setup and core support are important.
