How To Open Filing Cabinet Without Key?

If you lose your filing cabinet key, you can try the following common methods:

1. Use a paperclip or hairpin to open the lock

Bend a paperclip/hairpin into an "L" shape. Use one end as a tension lever and the other end as a simulated key. Insert it into the keyhole and gently shake it to actuate the internal spring until the lock cylinder turns and opens. Many simple filing cabinet locks can be opened this way.

2. Use a thin tool to pry open the internal mechanism

Some filing cabinets have simple cam locks. You can use a thin screwdriver, envelope opener, etc., to pry open the drawer's latch mechanism from the side or inside the keyhole to release the drawer.

3. Find a replacement key or manufacturer's code

The lock body usually has a serial number. You can order a replacement key online based on the brand and serial number to avoid damaging the cabinet.
