Has anyone tried making a smoker out of a filing cabinet? Any tips on how to do it right?
Making a smoker out of an old filing cabinet is actually quite simple; the core steps are as follows:
- Gather a metal filing cabinet, expandable grill grates, high-temp paint, aircraft remover, basic tools (drill, tin snips, etc.) and hardware (screws, washers).
- Disassemble the cabinet, remove non-metal parts (plastic/rubber) and replace them with metal alternatives.
- Strip old paint with aircraft remover, then apply multiple coats of high-temp paint.
- Cut out centers of selected drawers for grill grates (meat drawers) and drill air holes in one drawer (fire drawer) with a sliding damper.
- Reassemble the cabinet, build a wooden lid, install new handles.
- Test with a dry run, then use by lighting coals in the fire drawer, adding wood chips and meat in the upper drawers, and adjusting the damper for smoke/temp control.
