My chair slowly sinks throughout the day. How long do gas cylinders last, and when should I replace mine?
Quality gas cylinders last 5-10 years. Signs it's failing:
| Symptom | What's Happening |
|---|---|
| Chair sinks slowly | Seal wearing out |
| Chair drops suddenly | Cylinder fully failed |
| Hissing sound | Gas leak |
| Won't stay at set height | Internal mechanism worn |
Quick test: Raise the chair to max height. Sit down. If it drops more than 1 inch within 30 seconds, replace the cylinder.
Replacement cost and difficulty:
| Approach | Cost | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| DIY universal cylinder | $25-50 | Moderate (need pipe wrench) |
| Brand-specific cylinder | $40-80 | Easy (direct fit) |
| Professional repair | $100-150 | Easy (they do all work) |
Pro tip: Before buying a new cylinder, measure your old one's diameter (most common: 22mm or 28mm) and check the top mounting style.
