Ahead of the upcoming High Point Market in April, Thayer Coggin is reintroducing a celebrated design from Milo Baughman’s archive—the Scoop Chair, first created in the early 1970s.
The relaunched piece will be showcased in the brand’s showroom in Thomasville, North Carolina, featuring a fresh presentation that blends its original aesthetic with modern materials.
According to CEO Royale Wiggin, the chair stands out for its refined proportions and sculptural presence. He described the design as a balance between structure and comfort, reflecting Baughman’s philosophy that furniture should be both visually striking and inviting to use.

The chair’s construction includes a curved plywood frame that forms the foundation for a fully upholstered seat made from foam and fiber. Signature details remain intact, such as the rounded “tootsie-roll” arms, clean welting along the exterior, and a polished stainless steel frame that encases a softly curved inner shell, giving it a floating appearance.
For its return, the Scoop Chair is dressed in Ultrasuede HP Malibu fabric, a choice intended to honor its heritage while updating its appeal for contemporary interiors. Wiggin noted that the material aligns with the chair’s legacy while meeting modern expectations for performance and durability.
Originally developed by Toray Industries, Ultrasuede is a nonwoven textile known for its soft texture, resilience, and ease of maintenance. It offers breathable, water-resistant, and colorfast properties, and now incorporates 30% plant-based fibers in its composition.
