JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Serta Simmons Bedding is set to halt production at its Jamestown factory, marking the second plant closure for the mattress giant in 2023.
The 122,500-square-foot factory, situated in Chautauqua County in the far west of New York, opened just three years ago in 2020. The closure will affect 84 workers, with the shutdown expected to occur in the coming months.
Company representatives informed Furniture Today that a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice has been submitted to the state of New York, though as of Friday afternoon, it has not yet been published in the state’s Department of Labor database.
This closure follows another factory shutdown earlier this year in Moreno Valley, California, marking a trend in the company’s restructuring.
In a statement to Furniture Today, Serta Simmons explained that it is “optimizing its manufacturing footprint” as part of an ongoing effort to build a more efficient and responsive supply chain.
The company emphasized that it is consolidating certain operations while expanding others to enhance overall efficiency and better serve its retail partners and customers. The closure is part of a broader strategy that includes both operational adjustments and site closures.
“Decisions like this are never easy,” said the company in its statement. “We are committed to supporting affected employees during this transition and are grateful for the contributions made by the Jamestown team over the years.”
Production previously handled at the Jamestown site will now be redistributed across three other facilities: Coxsackie, N.Y.; Monroe, Ohio; and Hazleton, Pa. The company assured that retail deliveries will continue without disruption, despite the closure.
Once the Jamestown facility is closed, Serta Simmons will still operate 16 factories across the U.S. and Canada.
