Set to debut in mid-October, Seraphina marks Patterson Flynn’s first collection to bring rugs, textiles and wallpaper together under a single design concept. Its centerpiece is a romantic floral pattern offered in multiple colorways, allowing the different materials to be coordinated across an interior.
The design draws on a historic European textile but has been reinterpreted for contemporary spaces. Flowers, dragonflies and butterflies are combined with metallic accents and a richly textured background, while variations in the floral forms help create a handcrafted feel.
Patterson Flynn combines modern technology with traditional craftsmanship to adapt the pattern across different scales, colors and materials. The rug is hand-knotted from wool and silk, with a wool base and silk motifs. Both the wool and raw silk are hand-dyed using an abrash technique, creating subtle shifts in tone rather than a completely uniform finish.
The second launch, Abstraction, adds another chapter to Patterson Flynn’s abaca rug collection. The series uses hand-woven natural fibers and takes inspiration from traditional decorative techniques, including Italian marble paper and marquetry.
While abaca has long been associated with coastal homes and more traditional interiors, Patterson Flynn approaches the material in a more contemporary way. Instead of relying on conventional repeating patterns, the new designs use bold, graphic compositions that are intended to resemble individual works of art.
The designs take cues from distinctive objects and decorative arts, including marble and straw marquetry. Even when a pattern incorporates repetition, small variations in the material and weaving keep the surface from appearing overly uniform.
Light also plays an important role in the Abstraction collection. As it moves across the natural fiber surface, it highlights subtle sheen, tonal variations and changes in texture, giving each rug a distinct visual character.
Together, the two collections demonstrate Patterson Flynn’s approach to combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Seraphina focuses on coordinated pattern across multiple interior materials, while Abstraction uses natural fiber as a foundation for more expressive, graphic designs.
