Meet&CoWASHINGTON — Home furnishings retailers and importers are being advised to take proactive steps in preparation for a major regulatory change set for the new year. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is advancing a new mandatory requirement for the electronic submission of compliance certificates.
Starting in July 2026, nearly all importers of consumer goods will be required to submit compliance certificates electronically via the CPSC’s newly developed e-filing system.

According to a recent announcement from the Home Furnishings Association (HFA), which represents furniture retailers and includes importers, this move marks a significant transformation in how import data is handled and monitored on a federal level.
The data submitted will reflect what importers already must keep on file, but the shift to electronic submissions underscores the critical need for accuracy and promptness, the HFA noted.
Non-compliance could lead to delays at ports, goods being blocked from entry, or fines. Even small mistakes in filings could create disruptions in the intricate supply chain, HFA warns.
“Preparing in advance is not optional—it’s crucial,” the association urged, stressing that early registration will help avoid delays once the requirement takes effect.
The CPSC has explained that the new e-filing system aims to improve compliance processes, minimize paperwork, and enhance product traceability. The broader objective is to boost consumer safety and operational efficiency. The system will centralize the management of compliance for home furnishings, which must meet multiple safety standards.
Importers are encouraged to start the process now by registering for the CPSC’s portal, setting up an account, and linking product details. The agency will provide more resources and guidance in the coming weeks, including an informational webinar on January 8.
In addition, the HFA advises companies to carefully review their compliance documents to ensure all necessary information is complete and easily accessible.
While acknowledging the benefits of improved transparency and tracking, the association has expressed concerns about the system’s rollout, emphasizing the need for meticulous preparation to ensure a smooth transition.
