Meet&CoSYRACUSE, N.Y. – After nearly five decades in business, Metro Mattress, a well-known sleep retailer across the Northeast, is permanently closing its doors following approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York to begin liquidation sales.
Judge Wendy A. Kinsella granted an interim order authorizing the company to conduct going-out-of-business sales “free and clear of all liens, claims, and encumbrances.” The decision allows Metro Mattress to immediately start selling off its inventory at designated closing locations and wind down operations once sales conclude.
Court filings indicate that liquidation events are underway at six stores across New York state, while the company began shuttering its remaining 34 stores on Oct. 6.
Founded in 1976, Metro Mattress once operated around 70 stores at its height. The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sept. 4, 2024, following a year of financial challenges and a failed restructuring effort. Earlier in 2024, Metro Mattress closed about 30 stores in New York and New England in an attempt to focus on its stronger markets, but mounting losses persisted.

The company’s website now promotes clearance discounts of up to 70% on popular mattress brands such as Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic, and Sealy. During a recent court hearing, Metro Mattress attorney Jeffrey Dove described the company as “running out of money very quickly” and said that attempts to find a buyer had been unsuccessful.
According to Dove, the liquidation process is expected to last approximately five weeks. Court documents note that Metro Mattress will make “commercially reasonable efforts” to vacate each location promptly, with merchandise being transferred between stores as needed.
The order also grants permission for Metro Mattress to move inventory and conduct sales without further approval from landlords or government agencies, provided it follows standard consumer protection and safety laws.
A final hearing to formally approve the full liquidation plan is expected in the coming weeks, marking the final chapter for the decades-old retailer.
