LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Josh Underhill’s Family Furniture is closing its doors after 80 years in business, marking the end of a multi-generational retail legacy. The family has partnered with Planned Furniture Promotions to conduct the going-out-of-business sale.
Tom Liddell, Senior Vice President of PFP, reflected on the significance of an 80-year family legacy, noting that few retailers have served multiple generations as the Underhill family has. He emphasized that the final sale will be conducted with professionalism and respect, honoring the trust the business has built within the community.
The company traces its origins to 1946, when Frank Underhill began selling furniture in downtown Seattle. The original business, Underhill’s Unfinished Furniture, was eventually sold as part of redevelopment tied to the 1962 World’s Fair. Leadership then passed to Frank’s son, Tom Underhill, who relaunched the business as Underhill’s Fine Wood Furniture and opened multiple locations across the Seattle area.
In 2009, Tom’s son Josh took over and consolidated operations into a single Lynnwood location, expanding offerings to include full-home furnishings and renaming the store Josh Underhill’s Family Furniture.
The family cited changing economic conditions as the reason for closing after eight decades. The final liquidation sale opens to the public on March 20.
