Meet&CoZEELAND, Mich. — Herman Miller has appointed Kim Colin and Sam Hecht as the brand’s global creative directors. In their new roles, they will champion the brand by guiding the products, communications, and experiences Herman Miller delivers to customers worldwide.
Colin and Hecht are founding partners and principals of Industrial Facility, which will continue to operate as their London-based design office. Their work spans design research, creative direction, and product design. They have served as consultants and design partners to Herman Miller for more than two decades.
Ben Watson, Chief Creative Officer at MillerKnoll, stated that Colin and Hecht have been extraordinary partners to Herman Miller for over 20 years. He described them as transformational in their thinking and passionate about creating solutions that are culturally resonant, commercially relevant, and long-lasting.
Colin, a Los Angeles native, holds a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA and a Master of Architecture from SCI-Arc. Hecht, from London, trained as an industrial designer at Central Saint Martins before earning a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art.
Their partnership with Herman Miller began in 2006, expanding the brand’s portfolio to include Lino Task Seating, Formwork Storage, Plex Lounge, Wireframe Sofa Group, Ode Lamps, Civic Table Program, the Locale System, and the OE1 Workspace Collection. They began serving Herman Miller as creative advisors in 2008.
Both Colin and Hecht are Royal Designers and Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts. Colin received her RDI in 2015, becoming the first female product designer to earn the distinction. Hecht received his in 2008. The duo has won five iF Design Gold Awards, as well as honors from Red Dot, Design Museum, D&AD, and Dezeen. They are also dedicated design educators and frequent lecturers.
