Beyond Craft: Stickley’s Design Precision Shines At Fall Market

By Meet&Co

HIGH POINT — Luxury case goods were abundant at this year’s fall market, but standing out in the high-end category—where impeccable craftsmanship is expected—takes more than just quality construction.

For Stickley, a brand long known for its solid wood furniture made primarily in upstate New York, with additional operations in Vietnam and North Carolina, the differentiator lies in its attention to detail. Every curve, joint, and texture is part of a broader design philosophy that values both artistry and authenticity.

Design with intention

Marissa Brown, Stickley’s director of design, described her approach as “building a little surprise into every piece.” Subtle form relationships and balanced proportions are essential, ensuring the designs feel cohesive yet never repetitive.

“Proportion is a huge part of what we do,” Brown explained. “Each piece should feel right in relation to the space and to our brand’s history. The Stickley brothers were innovators who created timeless designs that still belong in contemporary homes—that spirit continues to inspire us.”

Texture that tells a story

Texture is another defining aspect of Stickley’s design language, achieved through the tactile richness of solid wood. “Furniture should feel as good as it looks,” Brown said. “I think about the way your hand glides along a tabletop edge or senses the softness of a finish.”

That philosophy is showcased in the Maidstone collection, crafted in red oak with a wire-brushed, cerused finish that highlights the natural grain. “It celebrates the wood’s organic character,” Brown noted.

While Stickley keeps an eye on market shifts, Brown relies on instinct and brand integrity more than fleeting trends. “If a design feels true to Stickley, we pursue it—regardless of what’s trending,” she said.

Craftsmanship as storytelling

Stickley’s commitment to craftsmanship is more than a tradition—it’s part of its storytelling. “Our drawers are center-hung, side-guided, and dovetailed. They glide smoothly with a single touch and can withstand incredible weight,” Brown said. “That’s the Stickley standard.”

Designing with solid wood also enables creative freedom. “I can run a bevel seamlessly through a solid drawer front—something veneers can’t replicate,” she added. “We look for opportunities to express craftsmanship in every joint, even if it challenges convention.”

Finishes that evolve the brand

Stickley continues to experiment with color and finish to keep its aesthetic fresh while staying rooted in tradition. “We’re moving toward softer, sun-washed tones and linen-inspired finishes over rift-cut oak,” Brown shared. “Rift oak’s even grain keeps things clean and modern.”

Each Stickley factory contributes its own character to the product line. “The oak from our New York factory can take up to 18 finishes, and our Vietnam team—trained in Manlius—maintains the same quality standard,” she said.

Honoring heritage through innovation

As Stickley marks over a century of craftsmanship, it continues to celebrate its roots. The brand’s 125th anniversary commemorative pieces reinterpret archival designs with modern twists—hidden compartments, updated finishes, and new materials.

This year’s highlight, the Daffodil Inlaid Blanket Chest, pays tribute to early 1900s tile designer Ernest Batchelder. “It features maple, cherry, and mahogany inlays, lamb’s tongue detailing, and a cedar-lined base,” Brown said. “It’s intricate, yet timeless.”

Collectors eagerly anticipate these limited-edition releases, each numbered and accompanied by a commemorative plaque—a testament to Stickley’s enduring legacy.

The Hudson Valley collection, inspired by upstate artisans, continues that celebration of local craft. “It’s about authenticity and self-sufficiency,” Brown said. “A modern take on Americana.” Meanwhile, the Walnut Grove collection—her second for the brand—remains Stickley’s top performer thanks to its sculptural lines and versatile scale.

The story behind every sale

Ultimately, Stickley’s success lies in giving retailers stories worth telling. “Dealers love sharing the craftsmanship, heritage, and emotional connection behind each piece,” Brown said. “When customers understand how something is made—and the care that goes into it—it becomes more than furniture. It becomes part of their story.”
