SELBYVILLE, Del. — After more than a century in operation, the family-run furniture retailer J. Conn Scott is closing its flagship showroom in Selbyville. The closure marks the end of an era for a business that has been a cornerstone of the local community since 1924.
While the Selbyville location undergoes liquidation, the company’s Rehoboth Beach store will continue to serve customers as a dedicated interior design center.
Founded by James Conn Scott, who transitioned from working in his family’s general store to opening a furniture business, J. Conn Scott has been passed down through three generations. The founder’s son, William, played a major role in developing the store’s signature style and reputation for exceptional service. William worked alongside his son Richard for a decade before retiring in 1995, remaining active in the company until his passing in 2023.
Under the leadership of Richard and his wife Lisa, the Rehoboth Beach branch was added to cater to a growing customer base along the coast. The couple now leads the business into its third generation, continuing to uphold the family’s legacy.
“We’re deeply thankful to our loyal customers, dedicated staff, and everyone who has been part of the J. Conn Scott story,” said Richard Scott. “While it’s not easy to close this chapter, we’re proud of the legacy we’ve built together.”
The store-closing sale began on May 29 at the Selbyville showroom, located at 6 East Church St. The 34,000-square-foot space is offering designer furniture and heirloom rugs at substantial discounts. Home accessories are marked down by 50%, with featured brands including Bernhardt, Century, Ralph Lauren Home, Hooker Furniture, and more.
