How Far Should A Rug Go Under The Sofa?

How far should a rug go under the sofa? I’m styling my living room and can’t decide if just the front legs should sit on it or the whole thing.

A rug should typically extend at least 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) under the sofa, or include the front legs or even all legs depending on the layout.

In larger rooms, placing all front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug creates a more cohesive look; in smaller spaces, only the front legs can sit on the rug to save space.

Ideally, the rug should extend 20–30 cm beyond both sides of the sofa for better balance and visual stability.
