My shoulders always feel completely tense and knotted by 3 PM, and I suspect it’s because my armrests are at a weird height. How do I figure out the exact right level to set them at to relieve this upper body tightness?
Setting your armrests to the wrong level is a fast track to severe neck strains.
To fix this, let your shoulders drop completely naturally, bend your elbows at a relaxed 90-degree angle, and raise the armrests until they just barely touch the underside of your forearms.
How high should armrests be depends entirely on keeping them flush with your keyboard tray or desk surface so your wrists don't bend awkwardly while typing. If your armrests force your shoulders into a constant shrug, drop them immediately; if they are too low, you'll end up leaning to one side and throwing your spine completely out of alignment.
