CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — IKEA U.S. has expanded its Buyback & Resell program by adding more than 700 new items, bringing the total number of eligible products to over 2,800. Customers can return a wider variety of furniture and home goods, from storage units and sofa tables to glassware and décor, in exchange for in-store credit.
Bryan Walker, Product Quality Manager at IKEA U.S., stated that customer demand for secondhand items demonstrates how quality, affordability, and sustainability can align. He noted that most resold items are repurchased within 48–72 hours from the store’s As-Is section, where customers can regularly find refreshed inventory.
The initiative supports IKEA’s broader goal of reducing furniture waste, amid EPA estimates that 9 million tons of furniture are landfilled annually. In addition to reselling items, the company distributed over 373,000 spare parts—such as screws and hinges—to customers in FY 2025, helping extend the lifespan of existing products.
What began as a single-store pilot has grown into a permanent national program, steadily broadening from core furniture to a wide range of household items. Returns to U.S. stores have nearly doubled in two years, from 8,000 items in 2023 to 14,700 in 2025, reflecting increased consumer participation and supporting IKEA’s transition toward a circular business model.
