Has anyone ever turned an old filing cabinet into a planter? Any tips on how to do it right without making a mess?
By following these steps, you can transform an old, unused filing cabinet into a modern planter for your home.
- Disassemble and thoroughly clean the drawers: Empty the filing cabinet and remove all the drawers. Then, use a cloth to clean away dirt and dust. If there are rust spots, sand them smooth with sandpaper.
- Drill drainage holes: Use a power drill to drill 6 to 10.5-inch drainage holes in the back of the filing cabinet to prevent water from accumulating and causing root rot.
- Spray the filing cabinet with rust-proof paint: To prevent the filing cabinet from rusting, apply two coats of rust-proof paint to the outside of the cabinet, ensuring all edges and corners are thoroughly covered.
- Add potting soil and plants: Mix equal parts of compost and high-quality potting soil and fill the entire filing cabinet. Then, plant your desired plants or choose plants suitable for your local climate and light conditions.
- Regularly maintain the planter and observe plant growth: If your filing cabinet is metal, you may need to reapply a coat of rust-proof paint to the outside of the cabinet as needed. Also, as the plants grow, the nutrients in the soil will be gradually depleted, so you will need to add a few inches of fresh compost to the planter annually.
