I’m planning to refinish an old, rusty metal desk, but I’m not sure how to do it.
Based on years of experience in office furniture manufacturing, Meet&Co has compiled the following detailed steps for your reference.
First, thoroughly clean the metal surface of the office desk to remove dust, oil, and old wax. If there is rust, remove it first. Next, sand the entire metal surface with medium-grit sandpaper to slightly roughen it, improving paint adhesion. After sanding, clean off any dust and keep the surface dry.
Then, apply a coat of metal-specific anti-rust primer. This is a crucial step to prevent paint peeling and rusting. Once the primer is completely dry, apply the color, usually by spraying or brushing, following the principle of "multiple thin coats," with 2-3 coats being optimal. Allow each coat to dry completely between coats.
Finally, allow the paint to fully cure for at least 24 hours before reinstalling the drawer or using it to ensure the paint is durable and scratch-resistant.
