After nearly a century of serving the community, DeYoung Interiors, a family-owned business founded in 1928, will close its doors following the owner’s retirement. The decision comes after a 97-year legacy spanning three generations, culminating in the liquidation of inventory and the sale of the building.

Planned Furniture Promotions, a specialist in furniture sales events, is managing DeYoung Interiors’ going-out-of-business sale, ensuring that customers continue to receive the high level of service the store has been known for during its long history.
“DeYoung Interiors is more than just a store; it’s a symbol of hard work, dedication, and community service across multiple generations,” said Roy Hester, senior vice president of PFP. “We are honored to assist the DeYoung family as they close this remarkable chapter and celebrate the legacy they’ve created.”
Founded as DeYoung Furniture and Funeral Home by Nick and Cora DeYoung, the business transitioned into a full-service home furnishings store in 1959. The DeYoungs’ sons, Sidney, Gerhard, and Arnold, took over in the 1960s. In 1972, John and Gerald DeYoung, Robert Scheuneman, and Tom McGehee became co-owners, leading the store for the next four decades.
John DeYoung took sole ownership 10 years ago, with his son Kyle joining him in running the business. Now, John DeYoung is ready to retire, bringing an end to the family-run business.
DeYoung Interiors operated its original South Holland location until 1939, when a second store in Lansing, Ill., opened. In 2005, both locations were consolidated into the current 28,000-square-foot showroom in St. John. The showroom is now for sale, and interested buyers can contact John DeYoung at (219) 365-8362.
The going-out-of-business sale at DeYoung Interiors begins on Sept. 18.
